Silhouette Continent Clip Cards

These continent silhouette clip cards support children in developing visual discrimination skills, as well as increasing their familiarity with the different shapes of the world's continents.

Preparation:

Print your preferred set of continent clip cards – on heavy card stock for durability, or standard computer paper if you intend to later laminate them. Cut the cards to separate them. Laminate (optional). Gather small, child-safe pegs / clips.

Extensions and Extra Tips:

• Encourage the child to name the continents while matching the silhouettes.
• If you do not have small pegs or clips (like the sewing clips shown in the photo), paper clips or pen lids can work well as 'clipping' alternatives. Depending upon a child's fine motor ability and age, it may be more suitable for them to cover their choices using counters, coins, or decorative pebbles.
• This activity supports repetition for mastery; swap out pegs / clips to refresh the activity, or print and prepare the alternate card style.
• Where appropriate and possible, nurture independence by storing the cards and clips on a shelf within the child's reach.
• Once the child is familiar with the activity, use a globe or a world map puzzle to connect the shapes with their geographical locations.
• Once the child has mastered these cards, progress to matching and pattern making by cutting the rows of clip options away from the main picture cards. Invite the child to build each of the rows with the main picture cards.
• Print both styles of clip cards to support further matching and pattern making. Once the child has mastered the alternate style, cut the rows of clip options away from the main picture cards and use the main picture cards from both sets in a memory matching game. The child can also use both sets of 'rows' for an independent matching activity.
• When the child is ready, cut the rows (previously the clip options) into small single continent tiles. From here, the child can build lines of continents – either by copying a pattern or from verbal instruction.

This continent silhouette matching activity features 7 clip cards in two different styles. There are 4 pages in total – 2 pages feature large silhouette continents with small coloured continent clip options, and the other 2 pages feature large coloured continents with small silhouette continent clip options. These cards make for an interactive and independent introduction to the continents, as well as an engaging follow-up work.
