This bundle of 90 missing middle vowel cards was made to support early reading and spelling. This tactile reading material was made to support early language work (the pink series) in Montessori environments and homeschools. A full list of included words can be found below, along with further product details.

Preparation:

Print your chosen cards (and vowel tiles) on heavy cardstock for durability, or standard computer paper if you intend to laminate them later. Cut the cards to separate them. Use a corner punch or scissors to round out any sharp corners. Laminate the cards and add velcro dots to the missing vowel space and vowel tiles (optional).

Main Activity:

This activity can be worked on by a child entirely independently. If a child needs guidance when first encountering the activity, state the activity's objective simply: "Find the missing middle sounds," or phrase the objective as a question: "Can you find the missing vowel sounds to complete the words?" Provide the exact number of vowel tiles to ensure the activity has a control of error for the child. You may arrange for the child to work on one middle vowel sound at a time, one to three mixed vowel cards at a time or one set as part of a larger mixed group. The control charts are split into two (as shown in the thumbnails) to easily allow half the set (3 cards for each vowel) to be worked on at a time. You are welcome to cut and arrange the control boxes from the chart as you need.

I have written step-by-step instructions for those who would prefer the child engage with the activity as part of a more formal language lesson.

  1. Begin by reviewing the vowel sounds. Place each vowel tile on the child's work mat one at a time and ask the child what sound each letter makes. Point to each tile while repeating its vowel sound.
  2. Lay a single card on the child's work mat (above or below the vowel tiles).
  3. Ask the child to name the picture: "Do you know what this is?" If they don't respond or respond with a different name, name the picture card for them: "This is a dog."
  4. Ask the child what sound they hear first when you say the word (i.e. "What is the first sound you hear when I say Dog?"). You may choose to emphasise the sound you are asking the child to hear.
  5. Once the child says the initial sound, touch the first letter (written) on the card and repeat the sound aloud.
  6. Ask them what sound they hear next (i.e. "What is the next sound you hear when I say dOg?").
  7. Repeat the sound aloud, and then invite the child to select the missing sound from the vowel tiles.
  8. Once the child has placed the middle letter on the card, ask them what sound they hear last (i.e. "What is the last sound you hear when I say doG?").
  9. Once the child says the last sound, touch the last letter (written) on the card and repeat the sound aloud.
  10. Model sounding out and reading back the finished word.
  11. Move the completed card to one side of the mat.
  12. Replace the missing vowel tile (that completed the previous word), and place a second card on the work mat. Repeat the steps above.

Build towards having the child sound out the first, middle and last letters unprompted. Shorten your spoken dialogue, or intentionally leave silent spaces to invite the child to take over the activity dialogue.

Other Activity Ideas:

  • Segmenting Sounds: Use the cards with pom-poms, coins or cubes to help a child master verbally sounding out the middle vowel.
  • Writing / Stamping: The middle vowel gaps can also be filled with writing or stamping, depending on which activity extension best suits the child. Some children might like to make their own cards by drawing their own versions of the pictures and copying out the words. Providing plain paper strips prepared with a box and handwriting lines can help encourage this follow-up work.
  • "What Am I?" / Mystery Word Game: Give the child clues, such as: "I start with f and end with g, you can eat me." or for more of an auditory processing challenge: "My word rhymes with pig, but begins with f." The child can select the fig card and complete it (if it doesn't yet have its middle vowel).
  • I-Spy: Use the cards to play various I-spy rounds (by first, last or middle letter, or by rhyme / word family).
  • Vowel Sorting: Have the child sort the cards into groups (or baskets) by their middle vowels. Some children might like to record the words in their own middle vowel mini-booklet.
  • Creative Oral Storytelling: Choose a few completed cards, model and then invite the child to use the words in a (silly) sentence. "A fox ate six buns." After a few rounds, if the child is enjoying the activity, you may choose to challenge the child further. Select three words to begin a story: "One sunny Wednesday, a fox ate six big buns." Ask the child to select three more cards and have them continue the story aloud. Take turns until all the cards have been incorporated into the (silly) story to complete this satisfying and co-operative storytelling challenge. This game works well in small groups as well as pairs.
  • Sensorial Step: Adding a sensorial (or motor) step may help resistant or struggling learners. A simple way to add engagement when using this resource is to have the child 'reveal' or 'retrieve' a vowel tile before filling / completing a missing card. To give an example of each: you could place the vowel tiles in a mystery bag, or you could peg the cards to a string (at the other end of the room / at the end of an obstacle course) for the child to move and collect one at a time.
