Country to Continent Clip Cards

These country-to-continent clip cards were designed to be a point of interest in the geography area for primary / elementary children. The cards themselves (and the extension resources mentioned below) aim to support visual discrimination and early research skills.

Preparation:

Print your preferred set of country to continent clip cards – on heavy card stock for durability, or standard computer paper if you intend to later laminate them. Cut the cards to separate them. Laminate (optional). Gather small, child-safe pegs / clips.

Extensions and Extra Tips:

• Children can work independently or collaborate to use reference materials (globes, continent maps, flag maps, etc.) to identify where in the world each country is from.
• Each continent (Europe, Asia, Australia/Oceania, North America, South America, Africa) has 6 cards, Antarctica is included as an option in some of the clip card choices to encourage / enforce the observation / realisation that Antarctica does not have any countries.
• If you do not have small pegs or clips (like the sewing clips shown in the photo), paper clips or pen lids can work well as 'clipping' alternatives. Depending upon a child's fine motor ability and age, it may be more suitable for them to cover their choices using counters, coins, or decorative pebbles.
• This activity supports repetition for mastery; swap out pegs / clips to refresh the activity, or print and prepare an alternate card style.
• Where appropriate and possible, nurture independence by storing the cards and clips on a shelf within the child's reach.
• Inside the free subscriber library, there is a printable control chart for these cards, as well as a 'coin' extension activity. The extension activity features zoomed-in and to-scale circular intersections of each flag (both in 1-inch and 2-inch variations), these can be adhered to blank wooden circles for a visual discrimination matching game.

This country to continent matching activity features 36 clip cards in 4 different styles: style 1 – each flag with a row of coloured continent clip options; style 2 – each flag with a row of silhouette continent clip options; style 3 – each flag labelled with its country name and a row of coloured continent clip options; style 4 – each flag labelled with its country name and a row of silhouette continent clip options. There are 40 pages in total, 9 pages for each style (all style variations are shown in the thumbnails). These cards make for an interactive continent extension activity, as well as an engaging follow-up work.
