The purpose of these alphabet mats is to help children practice matching by phonetic sound, small objects (used with the mat) foster fine motor skills and offer children a tactile connection to the alphabet.

Preparation:

Print and assemble your preferred alphabet mat. If desired, laminate the mat to increase durability. Gather small, child-safe objects corresponding to each phonetic letter sound.

Main Activity:

  1. Invite the child to explore the alphabet mat and phonetic objects. Explain that they will be matching the objects to the letters based on their beginning sounds.
  2. Select an object from the basket, show the child and name the object (you can ask the child to name the object if it's an item that is familiar to them). Repeat the name of the object, emphasising the first letter. Place the object in the corresponding box on the mat.
  3. Allow the child to pick an object and encourage them to name it. Repeat the name back to them, emphasising the first letter (not necessary if the child is already emphasising the initial sound). Have the child place the object in the corresponding letter box. You may need to guide the child to help them make connections, for example: "What sound can you hear at the beginning of star?", "Star begins with a s (make sound).", "Can you find the letter that makes the s sound?"
  4. Continue until all letters have a corresponding object. If the child struggles with an object, gently guide them by naming the sound.
  5. Once the mat is complete, review the matched objects to reinforce the phonetic sounds of each letter.

Extensions and Extra Tips:

  • If you do not have small objects on hand or are missing objects for particular letters, one of my favourite workarounds is to instead laminate stickers (they are already printed, often in very high-quality, and they are pre-cut – which saves so much time). I've long used alphabet sticker books that show real photos (such as this one), and expanded our envelope of 'photo objects' over time with stickers I've peeled off and saved from 'finished' sticker books.
  • This activity supports repetition for mastery. Swap out items in the object basket to refresh the activity.
  • Where appropriate and possible, nurture independence by storing the mat and objects on a shelf within the child's reach.
  • Use small movable letters with the mat to work on letter recognition. Inside the subscriber library, there are case-matching circles that fit the one-page mat – the extension circles are in both uppercase and lowercase, as well as print and cursive.

Further Product Details:

This resource contains both single-page and double-page alphabet mats. There are 4 single-page mats (shown in the thumbnails), as well as 2 separate files for the double-page alphabet mats – each contains 18 pages, one with a cutting guide and one without. There are 8 style options for the double-page mat (4 in a smaller font and 4 in a larger font); all style options can be seen in the thumbnails. I hope that within the variety, there is a suitable version for your classroom / homeschool needs.
